Information about cookies
Due to the entry into force of the corresponding amendment to the “Information Society Services Law” (LSSICE) established by Royal Decree 13/2012, it is mandatory to obtain the user’s express consent for all websites that use non-essential cookies, before the user browses them.
What are cookies?
Cookies and other similar technologies such as local shared objects, flash cookies or pixels are tools used by web servers to store and retrieve information about their visitors, as well as to ensure the proper functioning of the website.
Through the use of these devices, the web server is able to remember certain data relating to the user, such as their preferences for displaying the pages of that server, username and password, products of greatest interest, etc.
Cookies affected by regulations and exempt cookies
According to the EU directive, cookies that require the user’s informed consent are analytical cookies and advertising and affiliate cookies, while technical cookies and those necessary for the operation of the website or for providing services expressly requested by the user are exempt.
Types of cookies
According to their purpose
- Technical and functional cookies: these are cookies that allow the user to browse through a website, platform or application and use the different options or services available therein.
- Analytical cookies: these allow the party responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used to measure the activity of websites, applications or platforms and to create browsing profiles of users of such sites, applications and platforms, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of usage data.
- Advertising cookies: these allow the most efficient possible management of advertising spaces that, where applicable, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as edited content or the frequency with which ads are displayed.
- Behavioural advertising cookies: these collect information on the user’s preferences and personal choices (retargeting) in order to enable the most efficient possible management of advertising spaces that, where applicable, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided.
- Social cookies: these are cookies installed by social media platforms on services to allow users to share content with their friends and networks. Social media platforms have the ability to track users’ online activity outside the Services. This may affect the content and messages users see on other services they visit.
- Affiliate cookies: these allow tracking of visits coming from other websites with which the website has an affiliate agreement (affiliate companies).
- Security cookies: these store encrypted information to prevent stored data from being vulnerable to malicious attacks by third parties.
According to ownership
- First-party cookies: these are cookies sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: these are cookies sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
According to storage duration
- Session cookies: these are a type of cookies designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website.
- Persistent cookies: these are a type of cookies in which data remains stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie controller, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
